Mapmaker’s Coastal Spiced Rum

Tasting Notes

Nose

A touch of banana and vanilla followed by light citrus and toffee notes

Palate

A full bodied burst of bright citrus followed by salted caramel with a light peppery spice

Finish

Salted caramel with well rounded spice and a delicious lasting salinity

Mapmaker’s Rum is a tribute to Timothy Pont. An excellent cartographer who spent his summers diligently surveying Scotland. In 1600/1601 Pont was appointed minister of Dunnet Parish a post he still held in December 1610. The only monument to Pont, other than his maps, is a commemorative plaque in Dunnet Parish Church which is located next door to Dunnet Bay Distillery.

Botanicals

  • Scottish Sea Salt

At Blackthorn, Scottish West Coast sea water is slowly trickled through a graduation thorn tower whilst being evaporated using the exhilarating West Coast winds to create delicious sea salt. This adds a hint of salinity to Mapmaker’s Rum.

  • Scurvy Grass

Cochlearia officinalis is a perennial coastal plant characterised by a strong mustard/horseradish taste. Scurvy grass is used in our Mapmaker’s Coastal Spiced Rum to add hints of liquorice and a peppery heat to the spirit. Contrary to to popular belief, scurvy grass isn’t much higher in vitamin c than other botanicals but fell in to favour as it was easy to find and identify.

  • Kelp - Oarweed

Kelp are large brown algae seaweeds that grow in underwater forests in shallow oceans. The large, brown, flat blades of kelp are rich in iodine, protein, magnesium, calcium and iron – a real superfood! However, we use kelp to provide a fabulous oceanic umami flavour to the rum.

  1. Absolutely love this Rum, picked some up on our honeymoon and just had to get a bottle to celebrate the 1 yr anniversary

  2. We really liked this rum bought as a gift for my boyfriend. It’s wonderful by its self as a warming winter tipple but equally yummy served long with coke. Just the right sweetness balanced with spice. Appreciated the sustainable packaging and quick delivery service too, thank you!

  3. I purchased this as a gift for rum loving friends as one of the couple is already a fan of Rock Rose gin…all of them! The feedback of the rum is also top notch, they’ve been enjoying it throughout the festive season and have awarded it 5 . Keep doing what you’re doing in the North, we’re big fans here London!

  4. I bought the Mapmakers Rum for my sisters retirement present after I had bought it for myself. I loved it but as I am not a rum drinker and she is her opinion is what matters . Her response was that it was a lot smoother than her usual Rum and that she could actually drink it on its own just with ice which she would never do before . So a big thumbs up and looks like a new best Rum for her.
    cheers

  5. I can’t comment on the rum as yet as the 2 bottles were bought for birthday presents next month. But I can say that the ordering process and communication was spot on as was the packaging and delivery. Looking forward to sampling it in the next few weeks

  6. I am loving Mapmakers Rum. It is fabulously smooth and quite delicately flavoured. I drink it like a good malt with just a little splash of water to release the esters.

  7. After months of anticipation Mapmakers Rum is finally here. A firecracker with smooth finish and lasting warmth. Great!

  8. Hello Stuart, I am delighted that you have enjoyed our Mapamker’s Coastal Spiced Rum! For our own House Rum Kevin ferments molasses using a whisky yeast which is then twice distilled. You can find a wee bit more info in our blog post Distillery News – Mapmaker’s Coastal Spiced Rum. I hope it answers your questions but please do give us a shout if not 🙂 Claire

  9. I’m somewhat dissappointed to see that the ingredients for this rum include “carribean rum”. There’s nothing that specifically states what the distillation comes from in the cut added at Dunnet Bay – is this from sugar cane or the same base as other spirits?

However, when it comes to taste, I have no complaints whatsoever. I haven’t tried mixing this with anything else, because the straight spirit is smooth and beautifully spiced. I don’t know why you’d want to add anything else to it.

It’s also great to just sip through the day for relief if you have a throaty cold.

  10. Found the Mapmakers Rum to be lovely & smooth with a warm glow. Delicious

  11. Just arrived this evening. Only one thing to say, “Perfection”.
    You have nailed it.

  12. The delivery was really quick unfortunately I can’t tell you how nice the map makers rum is as this bottles for keeping, I’m a bit sad like that but I will just have to buy another one to drink

  13. Arrived quickly and we had to taste the minute we got it. Smooth and silky for drinking on its own, delicious in cocktails. Bottle is almost finished and we’ll be buying more. I’m a big fan of the Rock Rose gins and to be able to source a Rum of this quality from Scotland is fantastic.

  14. Hi I’m not normally a rum drinker , but this blew me away , so delicious with cola or just ice …. 1 bottle is not enough ❤️

    Den Francis

  15. The proof is can you drink it neat – and yes you can..

    Carol

  16. Cracked it open straight away and have to say it’s a cracker.
Quite a light and sweet rum with a wee hint of butterscotch and liquorice, oh and a hint of spice at the end.
Will be getting me some more, me hearties!!!

    Bruce Russell

  17. This is a cracking, refreshing rum. It’s quite light and fruity but with butterscotch and wee hint of liquorice.
Tried it neat as a taster but preferred it with a touch of lemonade – a definite result and I’ll be getting me more , me hearties!!!

    Bruce Russell

  18. Really enjoyed this …. Another staple for the drinks cupboard!!

    Tim Ryall

  19. Absolutely superb- not a traditional rum drinker but ordered this as I love your gins. Great over ice or with ginger beer – also tried with pineapple juice but felt it masked the rum too much. Definitely a new tipple

    Jane Milton

  20. We all had a wee one when it arrived, its delicious, we couldn’t just stop at one and that’s coming from someone who can take or leave rum normally. Guess it’s going to have to be a regular order.

    Emma McMillan

  21. Had a cheeky wee one when my order arrived and Wow! Absolutely amazing, served as you suggested and it was truly delicious

    Lesley Durdle

  22. Just superb, the blend and ‘bite’ of the spice is special. One of my favourites now. Will be a regular order from this household.

    Knott Shaun

  23. Oh wow! Rum is not a beverage I have gone to before but if Rock Rose made it, I will give it a go and I am so glad I did. I tried it neat to start with to get a full hit of the flavour and it is a veritable explosion of warm spices all over your tongue. I went for the perfect serve with cola and a slice of orange and it softens the spice a little bit but it is like a hug in a glass. I think Mapmakers rum is now going to be a constant along with all my other Rock Rose gins.
